Apricot Marmalade and the Edmondson Transmittal is a Vietnam-era military satire set in Bangkok and it is genuinely, properly funny in a way I didn’t see coming.
The premise: the US Army’s Military Intelligence unit in Thailand is, to put it charitably, not very good at intelligence. Colonel Morgan is a disaster. Major Harris cares more about his red Mercedes than about Soviet spies. Trooper Cooper thinks he’s dying of every disease he hears discussed. Irv Bonner is scared of snakes and lives surrounded by them.
Think Catch-22 energy but with more humidity and fewer airplanes. Really fun read.
